Operational guide

Multi-location inventory.One picture, many places.

Learn the operating principles behind multi-location inventory management, from location permissions and stock in transit to partial receipts.

Make each location meaningful

A multi-location inventory view starts by naming the places where stock is stored, used, received or dispatched: warehouses, stores, workshops, sites and drop points. A useful hierarchy and location permissions help each team see the part of the network for which it is responsible.

Separate on hand from available

The total shown at a site may include stock that cannot be used immediately. Keep quarantine, expiry, custody and count status clear. At the network level, show when stock has left a source but has not yet been received by a destination.

Treat transfers as a journey

A transfer should record dispatch, in-transit and receipt states. Partial receipts and shortages are part of the operational record, not exceptions to hide. This protects visibility at both ends and makes a later stock review more useful.

Use the view to decide

A map or list is most useful when it helps a team identify the next operational question: where is stock at risk, what is already on the way, and who can review a proposed move. It does not imply carrier integration, route optimisation or fleet tracking.
